There are free backlink tools online that will tell you how many backlinks any particular site has. Keep in mind that the results may not be an exact count, but they are close enough to use for your purpose. It's actually quite amazing to me how many sites with poor page rank, but with lots of off page backlinks, manage to get on Google's page one for their keyword. If you have a keyword that's not searched very often, it is fairly easy to do that. Once again, just Google the term "

In yahoo site explorer, it has 4,500 links from such obviously natural sources as rankcracker , forum profiles, and blog spam.
Yep. Gotta say, google did a great job of clearing the spam out of that keyword.
Second, guest blogging can give you a tremendous amount of credibility and visibility in your marketplace. While people have been guest blogging since blogs have been around, trust me when I say that I highly doubt all or very many (if any) of your serious competitors are guest blogging. It's not something a lot of entrepreneurs are doing and so the lane is still wide open for you to stand out front and center in your niche.
